How the Zambia Super League Works
The Super League is the top tier of Zambian football, run by the Football Association of Zambia and carrying MTN as its title sponsor. Clubs play each other home and away across the season, three points for a win and one for a draw, with the table settled on points and then goal difference.
The competition has just changed size. The FAZ Council approved expanding it from 18 clubs to 20, and expanded the division below it on the same terms (reported by ZamFoot). A twenty-club league means a longer calendar and more midweek rounds to fit it in, which puts more weight on squad depth than an eighteen-club season did.
Promotion and Relegation
Getting to twenty clubs takes a transitional season rather than a rule change alone. For this campaign only two clubs are relegated at the end of the season, while four come up from the National Division One below it. That is the arithmetic that adds the two extra places.
It also changes how the season reads. A wider promotion route keeps more second-tier clubs in contention later into the year, and a narrower relegation zone means fewer top-flight clubs are playing for survival than usual. Both are one-season effects tied to the expansion, not the league's normal shape.
How Zambian Clubs Reach CAF Competition
Two continental places are available, and since a 2026 change they are reached by different routes. The Super League champion represents Zambia in the CAF Champions League. The ABSA Cup winner takes the CAF Confederation Cup place — previously that berth went to the league runners-up, so the domestic cup now carries continental qualification that it did not before.
The Zambian Premier League set this out through its chief executive, Joseph Chimpampwe, including the case where one club wins both the league title and the cup in the same season (reported by ZamFoot). FAZ's own site was unreachable when this page was checked, so that report is the nearest available source rather than the regulations themselves.
Clubs in the Super League
The current field is in the table above, which is the reliable answer — with four clubs promoted and only two relegated this season, any list written from memory is out of date. Among the names with the longest histories in the division are Nkana, Power Dynamos, ZESCO United, Zanaco, Green Buffaloes, Kabwe Warriors and Mufulira Wanderers.
Reputation is a weak guide to a given season, though. Which clubs are strong depends on recent recruitment, whether a side is also playing cup or continental football, and how it travels — grounds differ in surface and altitude, and journeys between them are long enough to matter.
Zambia Super League FAQ
How many clubs are in the Zambia Super League?
Twenty. It was eighteen until the FAZ Council approved the expansion, and rather than growing the division over several years, the two extra places are being added in one go — which is why this season's promotion and relegation numbers look nothing like the usual ones.
What does winning the league actually get you?
Zambia's place in the CAF Champions League. Worth spelling out, because the second continental place no longer follows the league table. Finishing runner-up once carried Zambia's CAF Confederation Cup qualification; under the 2026 arrangement that berth goes to the ABSA Cup winner instead, so a runner-up finish no longer brings continental football with it. Prize money, seeding and the rest of what a high finish is worth are unaffected — it is the CAF route specifically that has moved.
When does the season run?
Broadly from October into the new year, which puts Zambian football out of step with the European calendar rather than alongside it. A domestic round can land on the same weekend as a full Premier League programme, so the two compete for attention rather than filling each other's gaps. Exact start and end dates are set by FAZ for each season and are not published anywhere this page can quote, so the fixture list above is the current answer rather than the paragraph you are reading.
How does a Zambian club reach CAF competition?
Two routes, and since 2026 they are genuinely separate. Win the league and you are in the Champions League; win the ABSA Cup and you are in the Confederation Cup. The practical effect is that the domestic cup now matters far more than it used to: a club can have an ordinary league season and still reach continental football through a knockout run. How many ties that run takes depends on the size of the draw and on which round a club enters, and FAZ sets both per edition, so there is no fixed number to quote.
Why are only two clubs going down this season?
Because four are coming up. Two out against four in is the arithmetic that takes an eighteen-club division to twenty, and it is a one-season ratio rather than how the league normally works. It also changes the shape of the run-in: fewer clubs than usual are fighting relegation, and more second-tier clubs are still chasing promotion in the closing weeks.
Can I bet on Zambia Super League matches?
Sometimes — domestic Zambian coverage comes and goes, and no bookmaker carries every league every week. The Megapari football page shows what is open right now rather than what was open when this was written, so it is the honest place to check.
